Chip Griffin just wrote a work on the future of media titled The New Media Cocktail. It’s on the same subject as A Voz do Público, but this time a bit more focused on the probable outcome of the media revolution. The work was compiled in a 30 page e-book.
The New Media Cocktail first presents the actual industry situation which reflects the opportunities given by the internet, that originated the long tail. Then it presents the so called media cocktail, where text, audio and video converge, specially in the news media, that will only differentiate in the way those ingredients are mixed. Chip Griffin also predicts that professional journalists will embrace user created content sooner or later and that there will always be the need for professional editing. But there’s no doubt that they will also converge.
The second main topic of the e-book is niches and the power they’re gaining in the new era. Again, a subject also covered on the The Long Tail book I’m currently reading. Chip Griffin also emphasizes the power of micro-niches, that were simply invisible for the old media and now finally maybe be profitable. Finally, some thoughts on content distribution, regarding that the content should be freely available but that is never free from cost. There’s always a cost for the user, even if it’s only his attention.
It’s definitely a good work by a media and information junkie, as the author called himself. And it shows what an interesting world we’re getting into.
